November 2 is known here as All Souls Day, although implicitly, we also honor the dead the day before (November 1 is All Saints Day, or in local parlance, Todos Los Santos). Tradition calls for some to go the night before or on the day itself to the cemeteries. people would pitch tents to protect them from the elements on at least a whole day stay. These temporary refuge are made of tarpaulin covers most of the time, though towels, umbrellas, old posters and even newspaper are used. Relatives and friends of the dearly departed stay until sunset, sharing potluck meals and drinks, chatting and horsing around as the day goes by. They honor the dead by feasting with the living.
